Events at The Hub on Canal- February 2018

WHAT/WHO: 1st Saturday Art Stroll from one end of Canal Street to the other, including local artists represented at The Hub on Canal. Opening reception in the Mackay Gallery during Gallery Walk for the February exhibition, “Context for Crisis” with Charles Everett featuring his oil and mixed media artwork. The artist states that context influences important areas of life such as perception of risk, credibility, and identity (to name a few).  Artist Talk at 6pm in The Mackay Gallery.

WHEN: Saturday, February 3. Art Stroll runs from 10am-4pm. Live Music presented by The Hub’s own jug/blues band, The HubCats from 11am-1pm.  Live Music with Ben Wilkins performing live classics and originals. Gallery Walk at The Hub on Canal is from 4-7pm. Show runs through February 25.  Event is free and open to the public.

WHAT:  Dulcimer Society at The Hub on Canal

The New Smyrna Beach Dulcimer Society promotes the mountain dulcimer and other acoustic instruments by playing and teaching music on these instruments. Audience participation is encouraged with familiar music.  The history of the mountain dulcimer is woven into the presentation as you enjoy the sounds of one of the few instruments invented in this country.

WHAT: Special Music Night with A Night of Standards at The Hub on Canal

Marc Monteson will kick off the evening with tunes done by singers from the 1950’s.  Monteson has been a leader on the NSB music scene for decades, creating crowd-pleasing events that showcase our city and its talent.  Linda Cole, a descendant of the great Nat “King” Cole family dynasty, will once again delight the audience with her personal musical style.  The singers will be backed by a trio of fine musicians. WHAT:  100 Years of Hollywood Musicals I: The Hub on Canal Film Series with Paul Marino. Sing and dance through Hollywood history in this entertaining and educational review of the musical genre from the 1920’s to 2016.  Each session will feature introductory comments by the instructor, viewing of the entire film and a post-viewing discussion of cultural significance, major songs and themes, symbolism and historical context.  Popcorn provided!   February showings include Yankee Doodle Dandy on February 14, An American in Paris on February 28 and Oliver! on March 14.

WHAT:  Art in the Form of Film:  Midnight in Paris, starring Owen Wilson

Experience 1920’s Paris in this time-traveling romantic comedy. Nominated for 4 Oscars (winner of 1), this Woody Allen film is set in the present day but follows unfulfilled screenwriter Gil Pender’s of Paris where he mysteriously and repeatedly travels back in time to the 1920’s where he meets Cole Porter, Salvador Dali, Ernest Hemingway and Edgar Degas, among many others. Hub cinema instructor Paul Marino will introduce the film in his own unique style and lead us through a post-viewing discussion of the themes and messages of this recent Allen work.

Come to The Hub on Canal for a delightful evening of poetry and music!  Dan Pels, a surrealist poet, will emcee the evening, along with his co-host Mary Jane Barenbaum, a realist/romantic poet.  Llewellyn and John Mckernan, the talented husband and wife team, will engage the audience with an array of poetic offerings. Voice stylist extraordinaire, Lorale Mullins, will add to the evening’s enjoyment.

Photography and Art:  Influences and Interactions in the Modern Era.  Part 2 of this 2-part series of lectures/discussions traces the evolution of photography from its origins in the early nineteenth century to the emerging digital technologies of the present day. Series 2 lectures/discussions include: Modernism and the Real World, Feb. 20; Extending Human Vision, Feb.27; Pictorialism vs. Naturalism: Truth vs. Beauty 1857 – 2017, March 6; and Postmodern Dilemmas, March 13.

WHAT: Artist and Musician, Frank Ferrante, presents a Fundraiser at The Hub on Canal

Frank is a studio artist at The Hub on Canal.  He is also a talented musician who spent part of the 1960’s playing in The First Marine Division Band while stationed at Parris Island, South Carolina.  The sounds of his magical saxophone will delight the audience as he moves through a variety of movie themes. Frank is dedicating his proceeds from the evening’s musical performance to The Hub on Canal’s programming for children and The Hub on Canal 2nd Annual Student Film Festival.

 WHEN: Friday, February 23 from 7- 8:30pm. $10 donation for all, with proceeds going to the children’s programming and The Hub on Canal 2nd Annual Student Film Festival.

WHAT: CHALK IT UP! Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition, in conjunction with Art Fiesta!

Visit Canal Street to enjoy this new unique event featuring sidewalk chalk drawings by  adults and children alike. Artists will create their entries on the sidewalk in front of local Canal Street businesses; entry locations will begin at the intersection of Sams Avenue and Canal Street, extending west along Canal Street.  The Chalk It Up! Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will take place between 9am-5pm on February 24th and between 9am-12pm on February 25th.  Judging will take place at 1pm on February 25th with the award ceremony at 3pm.

Visit The Hub on Canal for this informal event highlighting films and movie posters created by students from ten Volusia County High Schools.  The public viewing will showcase student finalists for the film portion from the event as well as associated student movie posters. Judging for the film festival includes representatives from area colleges and universities, and the film industry. Please join us as we support our students through this very special event.
